Lodi dynasty
Also called: Lodhi dynasty · Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Class 8, Ch 2 "Reshaping India's Political Map"
Meaning
The Lodis were an Afghan dynasty and the fifth and last dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. They ruled from 1451 to 1526. They came to power after the chaos that followed Timur's sack of Delhi. By their time, the Sultanate's land had shrunk a great deal because Indian kingdoms and breakaway sultanates were growing stronger.
Example
Bahlul Lodi founded the dynasty in 1451. Sikandar Lodi founded the city of Agra in 1504. In 1526 Babur defeated and killed Ibrahim Lodi at the First Battle of Panipat. This ended the Delhi Sultanate and began Mughal rule.
Don't confuse with
- Sayyid dynasty: the dynasty just before the Lodis (1414–1451). The full order is Mamluk → Khilji → Tughlaq → Sayyid → Lodi.
