Lodi Garden
Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Lodi Garden is a park in Delhi with tombs of rulers of the late Delhi Sultanate, from the Sayyid and Lodi periods of the 15th and early 16th centuries. It matters for art and culture because it shows the tomb style of that time. Royal tombs were often octagonal (eight-sided), with a verandah of arches around them and a dome on top.
Example
The park has the octagonal tomb of Muhammad Shah Sayyid and the walled tomb of Sikandar Lodi, who died in 1517. It also has square tombs such as the Bara Gumbad and the Shish Gumbad.
Don't confuse with
- Humayun's Tomb: a later Mughal garden-tomb in Delhi. It is in the full charbagh style, a garden divided into four parts. Lodi Garden's tombs are earlier Sultanate buildings.
