Maulvi Liaqat Ali

History glossary

Topic: The Revolt of 1857 · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Maulvi Liaqat Ali was a Muslim religious teacher who led the revolt at Allahabad in 1857. He ruled in the name of the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah. This shows a pattern seen across North India in 1857. Rebels looked to the old Mughal ruler as the source of lawful authority, and local leaders acted as his officers.

Example

In June 1857 Liaqat Ali took charge of rebel Allahabad and called himself governor under the emperor. The British won back the city soon after, but he escaped. He was caught many years later, in 1871, and sent away for life as punishment, a sentence called transportation.

Don't confuse with

  • Maulvi Ahmadullah Shah: a different religious leader of 1857, based at Faizabad and Lucknow. He was known as "Danka Shah" and fought at Chinhat.
