Meaning

Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564) was an Italian painter, sculptor and architect of the Renaissance. He did his most famous work in Rome, paid for by popes. In his time artists began to be known by their own names, not just as members of a guild (a group of craftsmen). Michelangelo is a leading example of that change.

Example

In Rome he painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (1512), carved the statue The Pieta, and designed the dome of St Peter's Church.

Don't confuse with

  • Filippo Brunelleschi: he designed the Duomo (cathedral dome) of Florence. The dome of St Peter's in Rome is Michelangelo's.
  • Leonardo da Vinci: he painted the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, not the Sistine ceiling.
