Motilal Nehru
Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Nationalism in India"
Meaning
Motilal Nehru (1861–1931) was a wealthy lawyer from Allahabad and a senior Congress leader. Gandhi called off the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1922. After that, Motilal Nehru and C.R. Das formed the Swaraj Party. It wanted to enter the legislative councils and fight British policies from inside. In 1928 he led the committee that wrote the Nehru Report, an Indian draft of a constitution. He was the father of Jawaharlal Nehru.
Example
The Nehru Report of 1928 asked for dominion status for India. It was discussed at the All Parties Conference of 1928. There, M.R. Jayakar of the Hindu Mahasabha opposed Jinnah's proposals for Muslim seats. Hindu–Muslim agreement failed, and Muslims moved further away from Congress.
Don't confuse with
- Jawaharlal Nehru: his son. He belonged to the younger, more radical group that wanted full independence, and he presided over the Lahore Congress of 1929, which declared Purna Swaraj.
