No-changers
Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The No-changers were Congress leaders who wanted no change in Gandhi's line after the Non-Cooperation Movement was called off in 1922. They refused to enter the British-run legislative councils. Instead they backed Gandhi's constructive programme, which meant quiet work in villages: spreading khadi (hand-spun cloth), ending untouchability and building Hindu–Muslim unity. Leading No-changers included Vallabhbhai Patel, Rajendra Prasad and C. Rajagopalachari. Their village work kept Congress linked to ordinary people and prepared the ground for later mass movements.
Example
In 1928, Vallabhbhai Patel led the Bardoli satyagraha in Gujarat against a rise in land revenue, and it succeeded. It showed that years of constructive work had kept peasants ready for struggle.
Don't confuse with
- Pro-changers (Swaraj Party): C.R. Das and Motilal Nehru. They wanted to enter the councils and oppose the government from within. The No-changers stayed out of the councils.
