Nasiruddin Chiragh-i Dehli
Also called: Chiragh-i Delhi · Topic: Bhakti and Sufi Traditions · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Bhakti-Sufi Traditions"
Meaning
Shaikh Nasiruddin was a major Chishti saint of Delhi and the successor of Nizamuddin Auliya. He died in 1356. His title, Chiragh-i Dehli, means "the Lamp of Delhi". His shrine shows how Chishti dargahs (tomb-shrines) drew people of all faiths. That openness is a key sign of the region's composite culture.
Example
In the 18th century, Dargah Quli Khan described Delhi's shrines in his Muraqqa-i Dehli. He saw Muslims and Hindus alike visiting Chiragh-i Dehli's shrine, even during Diwali, and called the saint "the lamp of the entire country".
Don't confuse with
- Nizamuddin Auliya: He was Chiragh-i Dehli's teacher and died in 1325. Both men's dargahs are in Delhi, but they are separate shrines.
