History glossary

Also called: Salim Chishti · Topic: Bhakti and Sufi Traditions · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Bhakti-Sufi Traditions"

Meaning

Shaikh Salim Chishti was a Chishti saint who lived at Sikri, near Agra, and died in 1572. He was a descendant of Baba Farid. Akbar believed the saint's blessings helped bring him a son, so he named the prince Salim after him. That prince later became the emperor Jahangir. The saint's dargah shows the close bond between the Chishtis and the Mughals.

Example

Akbar built his new capital, Fatehpur Sikri, around Shaikh Salim Chishti's dargah. The white marble tomb stands inside the courtyard of the great mosque there.

Don't confuse with

  • Muinuddin Chishti: He was the founder of the Chishti order in India, with his dargah at Ajmer. Akbar visited Ajmer fourteen times, but that is a different shrine.
