Topic: The Revolt of 1857 · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Rebels and the Raj"
Meaning
This means the way Indian nationalists later remembered and pictured the Revolt of 1857. In the twentieth century they called it the First War of Independence. They showed its leaders as heroes who fought against foreign rule. Poems, paintings and stories praised leaders such as Rani Lakshmibai as brave warriors. This imagery helped build the nationalist imagination, giving Indians pride in the past and hope for freedom.
Example
Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi was shown as a warrior-heroine, sword in hand, riding into battle. Subhadra Kumari Chauhan's poem made the line "Khoob lari mardani woh to Jhansi wali rani thi" famous. It means "she fought bravely like a man, she was the queen of Jhansi".
