Meaning
The Padshahnama (also Badshahnama), meaning "Book of the Emperor", is the official history of Shah Jahan's reign, written in Persian. The court historian Abdul Hamid Lahori wrote its main part. It is an important source for Shah Jahan's court, his wars and his ceremonies. It shows the emperor as an ideal and just ruler.
Example
An illustrated copy of the Padshahnama, with fine miniature paintings of court scenes, battles and royal ceremonies, is kept in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle in England. It is counted among the masterpieces of Mughal painting.
Don't confuse with
- Ain-i-Akbari / Akbarnama: Abul Fazl wrote these about Akbar's reign and administration. The Padshahnama is about Shah Jahan.
- Tuzuk-i-Jahangiri: Jahangir's own memoirs, written by the emperor himself, not an official history by a court historian.
