Meaning
The Serampore Mission Press was a printing press set up in 1800 by three Baptist missionaries: William Carey, Joshua Marshman and William Ward. It was at Serampore, a Danish settlement near Calcutta. The East India Company did not welcome missionaries in its own territory, so they worked from Danish land. The press printed the Bible and other works in many Indian languages and helped printing in Indian languages grow.
Example
The Serampore press printed translations of the Bible in Bengali and other Indian languages. In 1818 it also began the Bengali weekly Samachar Darpan.
