Topic: Turkic Invasions and the Delhi Sultanate · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Sikandar Lodi was the second sultan of the Lodi dynasty. He ruled from 1489 to 1517. He was the strongest Lodi ruler. He tried to make the shrinking Delhi Sultanate stronger through better administration (running the state) and new cities. He also wrote poetry in Persian under the pen name Gulrukhi.
Example
In 1504 Sikandar Lodi founded the city of Agra and later made it his capital. He also brought in a standard yard for measuring land, the gaz-i-Sikandari, which helped officials measure farmland when fixing land tax.
Don't confuse with
- Ibrahim Lodi: Sikandar's son and the last Lodi sultan, killed by Babur at Panipat in 1526.
- Sikander Sani: a title meaning "the second Alexander", used on Ala-ud-din Khilji's coins. It does not refer to Sikandar Lodi.
