Tarabai Shinde
Topic: Print Culture and the Modern World · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 5 "Print Culture and the Modern World"
Meaning
Tarabai Shinde was a woman writer from present-day Maharashtra in the 1880s. She wrote with passionate anger about the miserable lives of upper-caste Hindu women, especially widows. She attacked the double standards men applied to women. Her work is seen as an early Indian feminist text (a text arguing for women's equal rights). It shows how print let women criticise society openly.
Example
In her Marathi book Stri Purush Tulana ("A Comparison of Women and Men", 1882), she argued that men, not women, were to blame for the vices society blamed on women.
Don't confuse with
- Pandita Ramabai: also wrote in the 1880s about the suffering of upper-caste Hindu women and widows. She is a different person, known for her work for widows and her book on high-caste Hindu women.
