Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Tilak Swaraj Fund was a fund the Congress started in 1921, during the Non-Cooperation Movement. It was named after Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who died in 1920. The aim was to raise one crore rupees to pay for the movement's work. This included national schools, khadi (hand-spun, hand-woven cloth) and the charkha (spinning wheel). It showed that ordinary people as well as rich supporters were willing to pay for the national cause.
Example
In 1921 the Congress set a target of one crore rupees for the fund. Donations came from all over India, and the target was crossed. This helped Gandhi's plan of building Indian institutions to replace British ones.
