Meaning

The Tomaras were a Rajput dynasty that ruled the Delhi region in the 11th and 12th centuries. In that period, Delhi was known as Dhillika. Tradition says the Tomara king Anangpal Tomar founded Dhillika and built its first fort, Lal Kot. In the 12th century the Chahamanas (Chauhans) of Ajmer took Delhi and made the Tomaras their vassals. The Tomaras matter because they made Delhi an important political centre for the first time.

Example

Lal Kot, credited to Anangpal Tomar, is one of the oldest fortifications in Delhi. Its remains lie near the Qutb Minar area. Later the Chauhans enlarged it. It was this Delhi that Muhammad Ghuri captured after the Second Battle of Tarain (1192).

Don't confuse with

  • Chahamanas (Chauhans): the Rajput dynasty of Ajmer (Ajayameru). They took Delhi from the Tomaras and were led by Prithviraja III at Tarain.
