Tripitaka Koreana
Topic: Print Culture and the Modern World · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 5 "Print Culture and the Modern World"
Meaning
The Tripitaka Koreana is a huge Korean collection of Buddhist scriptures. In the 13th century the texts were carved onto about 80,000 wooden blocks so they could be printed again and again. It shows how far Korea's woodblock printing had advanced.
Example
The woodblocks were carved in the mid-13th century and are still kept at Haeinsa temple in South Korea. UNESCO added them to its Memory of the World Register in 2007.
Don't confuse with
- Jikji: a later Korean Buddhist book from the late 14th century, printed with movable metal type rather than carved woodblocks.
