1987 Jammu and Kashmir assembly election
Topic: Regional Aspirations: J&K, Punjab, the North-East and Accommodation · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Regional Aspirations"
Meaning
In the 1987 J&K assembly election, the National Conference-Congress alliance officially won heavily. But many people believed the election was rigged, mainly against the Muslim United Front. People were already angry about poor administration. Now they also felt that democracy was being undermined at the Centre's request. This "democratic deficit" (the sense that people were denied a real vote) was the immediate cause of the revolt that followed.
Example
The crisis after 1987 turned into an armed insurgency in 1989. NCERT uses this case to show why regions need a real share of power.
