Meaning
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao ("Save the daughter, educate the daughter") is a government scheme. It was launched on 22 January 2015 at Panipat, Haryana. Its aims are to reverse the falling child sex ratio, the number of girls born for every 1,000 boys, and to promote girls' survival, protection and education. It now runs under Mission Shakti.
Example
In districts where few girls are born compared with boys, the scheme runs awareness drives against sex selection and promotes girls' enrolment in school. This work supports enforcement of the PCPNDT Act 1994, which bans sex selection.
Don't confuse with
- PCPNDT Act 1994: a law that punishes sex selection and regulates prenatal tests. BBBP is a scheme that works through awareness and incentives, not punishment.
