Congress Socialist Party
Also called: CSP · Topic: Era of One-Party Dominance: First Elections and the Congress System · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Era of One-Party Dominance"; Class 12, Ch 6 "The Crisis of Democratic Order"
Meaning
The Congress Socialist Party (CSP) was a group formed inside the Congress in 1934. Its young leaders wanted the Congress to work for a more radical and equal society. Acharya Narendra Dev was its founding president, and Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) was a leading member. In 1948, the Congress stopped its members from belonging to two parties at once, so the CSP left the Congress.
Example
The CSP shows how the Congress worked as a 'platform' during the freedom struggle. A whole organised group with its own ideas could exist inside it. After leaving in 1948, the socialists formed the Socialist Party.
