Socialist Party

Polity & Governance glossary

Topic: Era of One-Party Dominance: First Elections and the Congress System · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Era of One-Party Dominance"

Meaning

The Socialist Party was formed in 1948 by the Congress Socialists after they left the Congress. It stood for democratic socialism: an equal society reached through elections, not revolution. It attacked the Congress for favouring capitalists and landlords over workers and peasants. It had a presence in most states but won seats only in pockets.

Example

In the 1952 election, the Socialist Party came second by votes, with over 10%, but won under 3% of seats. This shows how the first-past-the-post system punished split opposition votes. Its dilemma grew after the Congress adopted the 'socialist pattern of society' in 1955. After many splits and mergers, parties such as the SP, RJD, JD(U) and JD(S) trace their roots to it.

Don't confuse with

  • Congress Socialist Party (1934): a group inside the Congress. The Socialist Party was a separate party formed after the socialists left in 1948.
