Consent manager
Topic: Transparency, Accountability and e-Governance · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
A consent manager is a body registered with the Data Protection Board under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023. Through it, a person can give, review and withdraw consent to the use of their personal data. One consent manager works across many platforms, so the person does not have to visit each app or company one by one. It makes consent easier to control. Under the DPDP Rules 2025, the consent-manager rules apply 12 months after the Rules were notified.
Example
A user has shared data with a bank, an insurance app and a health app. Through one consent manager, they can see all their consents and withdraw one with a single click. Consent managers can register from November 2026.
Don't confuse with
- Data fiduciary: the data fiduciary decides why and how the data is used. The consent manager only carries the person's consent choices.
