Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions
Also called: Consumer commissions, Consumer courts · Topic: Justice Delivery: Subordinate Courts, Tribunals, Legal Aid and Judicial Reforms · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions are quasi-judicial bodies under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. Quasi-judicial means they work like courts but follow simpler procedures. They hear complaints from buyers about defective goods or poor services. Which commission hears a case depends on the value involved:
- District Commission: up to ₹50 lakh.
- State Commission: up to ₹2 crore.
- National Commission: above ₹2 crore.
These bodies give ordinary consumers a cheaper and quicker remedy than a regular civil suit.
Example
A family buys a faulty refrigerator worth ₹40,000 and the seller refuses to replace it. They can complain to the District Commission.
