Meaning

The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) is an index published every year by Transparency International, a global anti-corruption group. It rates about 180 countries on a 0-100 scale. A low score means high corruption and a high score means a clean public sector. It measures how corrupt the public sector is perceived to be, based on the views of experts and business people. It does not count actual cases. It matters because governments and investors read it as a sign of how well a country controls corruption.

Example

In the 2024 CPI, India scored 38 and ranked 96th. The index is released every February.

Don't confuse with

  • Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI): these come from the World Bank. They cover six dimensions of governance, and control of corruption is only one of them.
