Meaning

The Delhi Agreement was a July 1952 understanding between Prime Minister Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah. It set out Jammu and Kashmir's autonomy inside India. Residuary powers (subjects not listed anywhere) stayed with the state, and the state could have its own flag. Its people got Indian citizenship, with special rights for "state subjects" (permanent residents of the state).

Example

Differences between the state and the Centre kept growing after the agreement. In 1953 Abdullah was dismissed and detained.

Don't confuse with

  • Indira-Sheikh Accord (1974-75): a later deal under which Abdullah accepted J&K as a unit of the Union and returned as Chief Minister.
