Meaning
The National Conference (NC) is a secular political party of Jammu and Kashmir, led in its early years by Sheikh Abdullah. It fought against the Maharaja's rule but opposed joining Pakistan, and it was allied with the Congress. It has ruled J&K many times, both when J&K was a state and after it became a Union territory.
Example
Abdullah became the state's Prime Minister in March 1948 and carried out major land reforms. The NC won a majority in 1977. After the 2024 election, it formed a government with the Congress under Omar Abdullah.
Don't confuse with
- Plebiscite Front: a body formed in 1955 by Abdullah's followers to demand a plebiscite. It was wound up after the Indira-Sheikh Accord, and the NC was revived in its place.
