e-Office

Polity & Governance glossary

Topic: Transparency, Accountability and e-Governance · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

e-Office is a system built by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). It replaces paper files in government offices with electronic files and electronic approvals. Every note, movement and sign-off on a file is recorded. This makes decisions faster, and anyone can trace where a file is and who delayed it. It is an example of e-governance used in government's own internal work.

Example

With paper files, a file could sit on a desk for weeks, and nobody could easily tell where it was. Under e-Office, the file moves on screen from officer to officer. Each step has a time stamp, so delays can be traced to a person.

Don't confuse with

  • Citizen-facing e-services such as UMANG or DigiLocker: these serve citizens directly (G2C, government to citizen). e-Office is about how government runs its own work.
