This was the forced departure of most Kashmiri Pandits (Hindus of the Kashmir valley) from their homes. It happened mainly in 1989-90, when the armed insurgency began and militants carried out targeted killings. Most of them have not been able to return.
Example
As militancy rose in the valley in 1989-90, targeted killings drove out most Kashmiri Hindu families. Many of them have lived as displaced people in other parts of India for decades.
