Topic: Challenges to and Restoration of the Congress System · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 5 "Challenges to and Restoration of the Congress System"

Meaning

"Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" means "Hail the soldier, hail the farmer". It was the slogan of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri (1964-66). He faced a war, a drought and food shortages at the same time. The slogan asked the whole country to stand behind two groups: soldiers guarding the border and farmers growing food. It matters because it showed that a leader after Nehru could unite the nation in a crisis.

Example

During the 1965 war with Pakistan, food was also running short. Shastri used "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" to rally support for the army at the front and for farmers in the fields.

Don't confuse with

  • Garibi Hatao: Indira Gandhi's 1971 election slogan ("remove poverty"). It was a promise to the poor, not a call to back soldiers and farmers in wartime.
