Meaning

The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) was a central mission that ran from December 2005 to 2014. It funded city infrastructure and housing for the poor. The money was conditional: states and cities got it only if they made reforms. These included implementing the 74th Amendment, passing community-participation laws and reforming property tax.

Example

Sixty-five "mission cities" got JNNURM money for projects such as water supply and housing for the poor. In return, their states had to commit to reforms, such as handing more powers to municipalities.

Don't confuse with

  • AMRUT: launched on 25 June 2015 for water, sewerage and green spaces in 500 cities. It came after JNNURM and is a separate mission.
