Street Vendors Act 2014
Also called: Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014 · Topic: Urban Local Government: Municipalities and Cities · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Citizenship"
Meaning
The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014 protects the livelihood of people who sell goods on city streets. It also sets rules for street selling. Under the Act, vendors are surveyed and given vending certificates, cities mark out vending zones, and no vendor can be evicted before the survey is done. It matters because street vendors are among the poorest city workers.
Example
Each city must set up a town vending committee. At least 40% of its members must be vendors, and a third of those vendor members must be women. Vendors were also linked to PM SVANidhi (2020), a scheme that gives them small loans.
