Meaning
The Karachi Agreement was signed on 27 July 1949 by military representatives of India and Pakistan, under UN supervision. It fixed the ceasefire line in Jammu and Kashmir after the 1947-48 war. A ceasefire line is a line where the fighting stopped. A UN group, UNMOGIP, watches over this line.
Example
The ceasefire of 1 January 1949 left part of Jammu and Kashmir under Pakistan. Six months later, the Karachi Agreement marked exactly where each side's troops stood.
Don't confuse with
- Line of Control (LoC): this came from the ceasefire of 17 December 1971 and was named at Simla (1972). It replaced the 1949 ceasefire line. Neither line is an international border.
