N. Chandrababu Naidu case
Also called: N. Chandrababu Naidu v. Union of India (2019) · Topic: Electoral Reforms: Money, Criminalisation and Simultaneous Elections · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The N. Chandrababu Naidu case is a 2019 Supreme Court order on checking EVM results. VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) is a printer attached to each EVM. It prints a paper slip showing the voter's choice. Before this order, the VVPAT slips of only one EVM per assembly segment were counted and matched with the EVM count. The Court raised this to five randomly chosen EVMs per assembly segment. The order matters because it increased checks on EVMs without slowing counting too much.
Example
In 2019, opposition parties asked the Supreme Court to count VVPAT slips from 50% of EVMs. The Court did not agree to 50%. It raised the check from one machine to five machines per segment, and this applied from the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
Don't confuse with
- EVM-VVPAT verification case (ADR v. ECI, April 2024): this case rejected 100% slip counting. It let candidates placed second or third ask for a check of the burnt memory in 5% of EVMs per segment. Naidu (2019) was about counting VVPAT slips from five EVMs.
