National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions
Also called: NCMEI · Topic: Statutory, Regulatory and Quasi-judicial Bodies · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) is a quasi-judicial body under the NCMEI Act 2004. Quasi-judicial means it can hear cases and decide them, like a court. It grants minority-status certificates to schools and colleges, and it settles disputes about their affiliation to universities. It gives practical effect to Article 30, which gives minorities the right to set up and run their own educational institutions.
Example
Say a college run by a minority community wants official minority status, or a university refuses to affiliate it. The college can approach the NCMEI. The NCMEI then decides the matter after hearing both sides.
Don't confuse with
