National Medical Commission
Also called: NMC · Topic: Statutory, Regulatory and Quasi-judicial Bodies · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The National Medical Commission (NMC) is a statutory regulator set up under the NMC Act 2019. It has been working since September 2020. It replaced the Medical Council of India. It regulates medical education, medical institutions and doctors. Its work is split among four autonomous boards, meaning separate boards that each handle their own area. It is an example of statutory regulation, where a body created by law, not the profession itself, controls a profession.
Example
In 2020 the NMC took over from the Medical Council of India as the regulator of medical colleges and doctors. The National Exit Test (NExT), a planned common exam for medical graduates, is still pending. Check its current status.
Don't confuse with
- Bar Council of India: it regulates lawyers under the Advocates Act 1961 and is the standard example of professional self-regulation. The NMC is a statutory regulator.
