University Grants Commission
Also called: UGC · Topic: Statutory, Regulatory and Quasi-judicial Bodies · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The University Grants Commission (UGC) was set up in 1953 and became a statutory body under the UGC Act 1956. It gives grants (public money) to universities and colleges. It also sets and maintains standards of university education across India. This makes it the main regulator of higher education.
Example
Universities follow UGC standards to receive grants under the UGC Act 1956. The Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill 2025 would replace the UGC, AICTE and NCTE with a single body. The Bill is now with a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). Check its current status.
Don't confuse with
- AICTE and NCTE: separate regulators for technical education and teacher education. The UGC covers university education in general.
