National Voters' Day
Topic: Elections and the Electoral System · NCERT: Class 9, Ch 7 "Elections"; Class 11, Ch 3 "Election and Representation"
Meaning
National Voters' Day is observed every year on 25 January, the day the Election Commission of India was set up in 1950. It has been celebrated since 2011. The goal is to get more people, especially young people who have just turned 18, to enrol and vote. On this day, people take a voters' pledge, a promise to vote without fear and without being swayed by money, caste or religion. It is part of the ECI's work to educate voters.
Example
On 25 January, schools and colleges hold events where students take the voters' pledge. Newly enrolled young voters often receive their voter ID cards (EPIC) on this day.
