Meaning

Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) is the Election Commission of India's main voter-education programme. It began in 2009. It aims to get every eligible citizen registered, to help people vote with full information, and to raise turnout. It matters because a vote only counts if the person is on the roll and actually turns up. Problems like urban apathy (city voters not bothering to vote) keep many people away.

Example

Turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha election was 65.79%, so about 34% of voters did not vote. SVEEP campaigns target such groups, especially young first-time voters, women and city dwellers. They teach people how to enrol, how to use the EVM and VVPAT, and why their vote matters.

Don't confuse with

  • National Voters' Day: this is a single yearly event on 25 January, the ECI's founding day, observed since 2011 with a voters' pledge. SVEEP is the ongoing programme that runs all year.
