Non-associational groups
Topic: Civil Society, Pressure Groups, NGOs and Self-help Groups · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Non-associational groups are one of the four types of interest groups in the Almond-Powell typology (1966). They are informal groups based on shared kinship, caste, religion or region. They have no formal organisation, such as a regular membership or office-bearers. They speak up from time to time, when an issue touches their identity. In India, caste groups are the standard example. These groups can be strong because members feel deep loyalty to each other.
Example
People of one caste may come together in a district to press local leaders for jobs or recognition. They act through community elders and family networks, not through a registered organisation.
Don't confuse with
- Associational groups: trade unions and business chambers are formally organised for one interest. Non-associational groups are informal.
- Anomic groups: anomic groups are spontaneous outbursts, like riots. Non-associational groups rest on lasting ties of birth or belief.
