Pluralism
Topic: Nationalism and National Self-determination · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Nationalism"
Meaning
Pluralism means letting many cultures and communities live and thrive inside one state. It becomes necessary once the "one culture–one state" idea is dropped. Class 11, Nationalism says pluralism needs two things. The first is group rights: constitutional protection for minority languages, cultures and religions, and in some cases group representation in legislatures. The second is an inclusive national identity that values every community's contribution. Self-determination is then understood as democratic rights for a nationality within a state, not a separate state for each group.
Example
India's Constitution follows this approach:
- Arts. 29-30 protect minority rights.
- Art. 350A supports mother-tongue schooling, and Art. 350B creates a Special Officer for Linguistic Minorities.
- The Eighth Schedule lists 22 languages.
- The Fifth and Sixth Schedules give tribal areas self-rule, and Arts. 371-371J make special provisions for some states.
- Arts. 330 and 332 reserve seats in legislatures.
Don't confuse with
- Multiculturalism without limits: NCERT accepts identity claims but warns that they must not lead to division, violence or an intolerant nationalism that forces everyone to be the same.
