Meaning

A short notice question is a question on an urgent public matter. A member asks it with less than ten days' notice, which is shorter than the normal notice period. It is answered orally (out loud) in the House, but only if the minister agrees to answer at such short notice. It lets members get quick answers on pressing issues without waiting for the usual question process.

Example

Suppose a sudden flood hits several districts. A member may ask a short notice question about relief arrangements. If the minister agrees, the answer is given orally in the House within days.

Don't confuse with

  • Starred question: this is asked with normal notice and marked with an asterisk. It is always answered orally, and members can ask follow-up (supplementary) questions.
  • Unstarred question: this gets a written answer that is laid on the table (placed formally before the House). No follow-up questions are allowed.
