El Niño — anomalous warming of the central-eastern equatorial Pacific — is the single strongest predictor of Indian monsoon variability. The 2026 season, forecast at 92% of the Long Period Average in April and revised down to 90% in May as El Niño emerged, offers a live demonstration of both the strength and the limits of this teleconnection [1][2].

Mechanism of influence

  • Shift in Walker Circulation: warm Pacific waters pull the ascending limb eastward, placing a subsiding limb over the Indian subcontinent and maritime continent, suppressing convection and rainfall.
  • Weakened land–sea thermal gradient: reduced heating contrast between the Tibetan Plateau/Northwest India and the Indian Ocean slows the cross-equatorial monsoon flow.
  • Circulation effects: fewer Bay of Bengal monsoon depressions and longer break-monsoon spells, concentrating deficits over central India.
  • Not deterministic: a positive Indian Ocean Dipole or low Eurasian snow cover can offset it, which is why IMD blends a Multi-Model Ensemble with its Monsoon Mission Climate Forecast System [1].

The 2026 season as a case study

  • Forecast trajectory: First Stage (13 April 2026) 92% of LPA (±5%), ENSO then weak La Niña-like turning neutral; Updated Stage (end-May) 90% (±4%), with an 84% probability of below-normal-or-less rainfall [1][2].
  • Spatial signature matched theory: below normal over Northwest (<92%) and Central & South Peninsular India (<94%), near-normal over Northeast India [2].
  • Actual outcome: June deficient by 35% with 70% of districts short; July recovered to 1% above LPA nationally, yet 47% of districts remained deficient; cumulative rainfall was 12% below LPA as on 2 August 2026 [3].

El Niño thus reshapes the monsoon's timing and distribution as much as its total. The way forward lies in translating IMD's improving forecasts into district-level contingency planning — staggered Kharif sowing advisories, reservoir regulation and expanded micro-irrigation — so that a below-normal season is a managed variability, not a livelihood crisis.
