  1. How the porous border deepens the nexus
  2. Integrated response

The Indo-Myanmar border is hilly and mostly unfenced, and it lies next to the Golden Triangle. That makes it one corridor for drugs, money and weapons. In October 2026, Operation Trident raided 38 sites in Assam, Mizoram and Manipur. It traced about ₹100 crore in hawala transactions and seized 500 detonators [1]. Weak border control turns drug trafficking into a security threat.

How the porous border deepens the nexus

  • Close to the source: Drug-producing areas lie just across the border. Crossings such as Champhai and Zokhawthar are "sensitive border corridors" [1].
  • Free Movement Regime and kinship ties: Border residents can cross without visas and share ethnic ties on both sides. This makes it hard to tell genuine travellers from couriers.
  • Drug money for insurgents: Drug money moves through hawala and mule accounts. One operation froze 1,424 accounts [1]. This keeps armed groups funded.
  • Arms on the same routes: Detonators were seized along with drug cash [1]. Explosives clearly travel the same routes as drugs.
  • Conflict-hit areas: Ethnic violence in Manipur, including Churachandpur, a raided site [1], weakens policing and the flow of local information. The civil war in Myanmar since the 2021 coup has left the other side of the border largely ungoverned.

Integrated response

  • Border management: Use smart fencing and technical surveillance on the most vulnerable stretches. Control the Free Movement Regime through permits. Strengthen the Assam Rifles.
  • Agency coordination: Use the NCORD mechanism [3]. Since 2020 the NIA has had powers under the NDPS Act, 1985 for narco-terror cases [3], so it should take over the explosives side early.
  • Follow the money: Only ₹17.82 crore of the ₹100 crore traced has been attached [1]. Under the PMLA, 2002, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) should turn account freezes into confiscation and convictions. It should also separate knowing mules from unaware account holders.
  • Cut demand: Focus the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, now in all districts) on the districts where raids took place [2]. Link the MANAS helpline to treatment and to tip-offs [2].
  • Diplomacy and development: Run joint operations with Myanmar. Offer border communities alternative livelihoods and community policing.

Drugs, money and arms in the Northeast feed each other, so no single agency can deal with them alone. If India combines tight border control, financial pressure on the networks and lower demand, it can make the border a secure gateway for the Act East Policy. This would also advance SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions).
