Consumer awareness
Also called: Well-informed consumer · Topic: Consumer Rights and Consumer Protection · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 5 "Consumer Rights"; Class 11, Ch 8 "Use of Statistical Tools"
Meaning
Consumer awareness means that consumers know their rights, their duties and the ways to get a remedy when they are cheated. A well-informed consumer is harder to exploit because they can spot unfair practices and use the redressal system. The right to consumer education supports it. So do government efforts such as the Jago Grahak Jago campaign (from 2005) and the National Consumer Helpline (toll-free number 1915). NCERT notes that awareness is spreading, "but slowly".
Example
An aware buyer checks the MRP on a pack. When the shopkeeper charges more than the MRP, they refuse to pay it. They also know they can complain through the National Consumer Helpline, 1915.
Don't confuse with
- Consumer duties: awareness is about knowing: rights, marks and remedies. Duties are about acting: asking for a bill, checking expiry dates and complaining when cheated.
