Energy efficiency star rating
Also called: BEE star label · Topic: Consumer Rights and Consumer Protection · NCERT: Class 7, Ch 12 "Understanding Markets"
Meaning
The energy efficiency star rating is a label on electrical appliances, such as ACs, refrigerators, TVs and laptops. It is issued by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Energy Conservation Act 2001. More stars mean the appliance uses less electricity. The consumer pays a lower electricity bill, and the environment gains. Labelling began in 2006 and is mandatory for notified appliances.
Example
A family comparing two refrigerators picks the one with more stars. It costs a little more at first, but it cuts their electricity bill every month. When many buyers do this, producers get the signal and make more energy-efficient models.
Don't confuse with
- ISI mark: the ISI mark certifies that a product meets BIS quality and safety standards. The star label shows only how much energy the appliance uses.
