ISI mark
Topic: Consumer Rights and Consumer Protection · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 5 "Consumer Rights"
Meaning
The ISI mark is the standard mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It shows that an industrial product meets Indian quality and safety standards. It is named after the Indian Standards Institution (1947), which became BIS under the BIS Act 1986. That Act was later replaced by the BIS Act 2016. The ISI mark is voluntary for most goods. It is compulsory only for notified items that affect health, safety or mass consumption, mainly through BIS Quality Control Orders (QCOs).
Example
Electrical appliances, cement, tyres, paper and LPG cylinders carry the ISI mark. An LPG cylinder must be certified because a faulty one can cause a serious accident.
Don't confuse with
- Agmark: Agmark is for farm produce such as edible oil, cereals and honey. It is given by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection under the Agriculture Ministry, not by BIS.
