Indian Economy glossary

Also called: GII · Topic: Industrial Policy, Public Sector, MSMEs and Disinvestment · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Global Innovation Index (GII) is a yearly ranking of countries by how innovative they are. It is published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It scores innovation inputs, such as institutions, human capital, research and infrastructure. It also scores innovation outputs, such as knowledge, technology and creative products. It shows how well a country turns its innovation effort into results.

Example

India ranked 81st in 2015. It has risen to about 38th–39th in recent editions, one of the largest climbs by any country.

Don't confuse with

  • World Bank indices: the GII comes from WIPO, not the World Bank. This is a common Prelims trap.
