Infrastructure status
Topic: Infrastructure: Transport, Communications and Energy · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Infrastructure status means the government has added a sector to the Harmonised Master List of Infrastructure. Once added, the sector is treated like roads or power for lending purposes. It can get easier and cheaper long-tenor credit (loans repaid over many years) and refinancing benefits (the chance to replace old loans with better ones). This matters because such projects cost a lot up front and earn money back slowly, often over 20–30 years.
Example
Affordable housing got infrastructure status in 2017, and data centres got it in 2022. A company building a data centre can now borrow for longer periods and at lower cost than before.
Don't confuse with
- Harmonised Master List of Infrastructure: the list is the official catalogue. Infrastructure status is the label a sector earns by being included in it.
