Transportation infrastructure
Also called: transport network · Topic: Infrastructure: Transport, Communications and Energy · NCERT: Class 7, Ch 7 "Physical Infrastructure"
Meaning
Transportation infrastructure is the network of roads, bridges, railways, metro, airways, shipping and ports. It moves people and goods, and it links producers to markets. It is one of the four parts of physical infrastructure. The other three are utilities, communication networks and energy infrastructure. Without it, goods cannot reach buyers and remote areas stay cut off. It also helps in disaster relief and national security, because defence forces can reach every kind of terrain.
Example
Rishabh travels from Delhi to Talegaon near Nashik. He goes by car over a wide bridge, then metro, then train, then bus over flyovers, and finally an autorickshaw to his door. Every leg of the journey uses a different piece of transportation infrastructure.
