Last-mile connectivity
Topic: Infrastructure: Transport, Communications and Energy · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Last-mile connectivity is the final leg that links a network, service or utility to the end user. Examples are the road from the highway to the village, or the ride from the metro station to your home. It is often the costliest and weakest link, because it has to serve many scattered users. A big network is of little use if people cannot reach it. Closing this gap is the practical route to equal infrastructure in villages and cities.
Example
PMGSY (December 2000) builds all-weather roads to rural habitations that had no road link. Feeder buses and e-rickshaws that carry people to metro stations also provide last-mile connectivity.
