Non-economic activity
Topic: Sectors of the Indian Economy · NCERT: Class 6, Ch 13 "The Value of Work"
Meaning
A non-economic activity is work done out of love, care, respect or service, with no money exchanged. It does not create monetary value, which means value that can be measured in money. Because of this it falls outside GDP, which is the total value of final goods and services produced in a country in a year. It still matters because it adds to the welfare and well-being of families and society.
Example
A mother cooks dinner for her family, or a student volunteers to clean a village pond. Nobody is paid, so neither activity is counted in India's GDP. Both still make life better.
Don't confuse with
- Economic activity: this creates monetary value and adds to GDP. A cook paid a salary in a restaurant does economic activity. The same cooking done at home for the family is non-economic.
